Hi Organizers:
I've been researching photo ops for the upcoming Red Rock Rendezvous ("...the nation's largest outdoor climbing festival."). I have all the research, and have completed an announcement, but have decided to go to the Paso Robles Zinfindel Festival that weekend! Does anybody want to lead a small group of members, or shall I post it as "On Your Own"? The draft announcement is pasted below. If you want to take over, please email me from my Profile. If I don't hear from anyone within a week, I'll post it as "On Your Own." (Scary thing is, I have not been getting any emails from this site.) Thanks. Jan Announcement: Draft (Sports Photography) Red Rock Rendezvous—On Your Own WHAT: “…the country's largest outdoor climbing festival.” Three days of sports clinics, including: mountain biking, trail running, climbing, bouldering, photography & climbing, and much more. I tried to get SNP members “insider access” to the clinics, but was turned down by the event coordinator. They have a restrictive BLM permit, which severely limits their use of the park. That said, there’s nothing prohibiting us from photographing at either Red Rock or Spring Mountain Ranch Park during the RR Rendezvous events. Remember, both parks charge entrance fees. WHERE: The RRR climbing clinics are at various locations around Red Rock (see climbing route info below). All other clinics and festival activities will take place at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. WHEN: March 19-21. The RRR Festival Schedule can be found at: http://www.mountainge... Clinics run from 8a-3p and from 9a-4p. The RRR Clinic Schedule is at: http://www.mountainge... DETAILS: [From the RRR website]: Most of the proposed Red Rock Rendezvous climbing clinic sites will be on the following crags located within four major areas within Red Rock: * First Pullout (i.e., Calico I): The Fixx Cliff, Dog Wall, Tuna & Chips Wall, Meat Puppets Wall, Bermuda Wall, Mark's Beginner Crag, Mark and Jake's Area [I understand that “The Hamlet” is a hot spot, but the only directions to it that I can find online are these: This wall is between the Ultraman and the Panty Wall] * Second Pullout (i.e., Calico II): Sweet Pain Wall, Black Corridor, Great Red Book Area, The Sandbox, The Magic Bus, Sun City, Bewitched [note: I understand that “Black Corridor” is a hot climbing spot…. Here are directions for getting there from “second pullout” parking area: To approach the BC, follow the trail from the parking lot until it forks, take the right fork and then take next left following the trail to the wash. Walk up canyon until it turns to the left (west), at this point walk over the slickrock past several pools of [seasonal] water to another wash. Cross this sandy wash to another slab of slickrock. Once you are on the slickrock, turn right (east) and follow it to the entrance of the BC…. [directions from another website: Head down the trail, making your second left and following it across toward some rocky formations. You'll go up and over some bushy slabs, then drop into some sand. From here, make a sharp right and go up the break in the cliffs. Some pools form seasonally, if they are there, staying right is probably quicker, but staying left is easier. Climb up a small (6') wall on your left, then go straight for the cliff in front of you, crossing over a small rocky outcrop. Make a right and walk along the right edge of this gully you are now in for about 20', then duck under the tree on your left and you have arrived.] * Sandstone Quarry Area: Guide's Wall, Mass Production Wall, Wake-up Wall, Avian Wall, The Trophy, The Hall of Fame, Frictiony Face Panty Waist, Split Infinity, Nevada Book, Spikes and Twine, Sub-America Crag * Willow Spring: Ragged Edges Cliff, The Case Face, Black Tract Area, Outhouse Wall, Karate Crack Area Best bet might be waiting in the parking areas well before 8a, and following the groups to wherever they intend to climb. |

I'll be climbing, and shooting! But mainly working on vertical skills.
Your best bets are going to be the BC (keep a low profile please, it's going to be PACKED) and the Panty Wall (ditto) http://www.mountainpr... http://www.mountainpr... though if someone were to get out early and set up in the north fork of Pine Creek out of the way with a long lens you'll get some good stuff at Dark Shadows, this one needs to be scoped first if you've never been there. http://www.mountainpr... Actually all of these should be scoped first before the rendezvous. |

I am planning on being out shooting at least for one day, which day however is still TBD.
