This is the first in a series of Study Groups designed for SNP members who are (1) interested in learning about innovative Master Photographers, (2) willing to participate fully in small-group discussions about the artists/genre, and (3) open to experimenting with new techniques & interpretations.
Each Study Group participant is expected to investigate the Masters prior to the Meetup. I’ll email summaries on each of the Masters (i.e., bios, influences, passions, links to photos, etc.) prior to the Meetup. By signing up for a Study Group, you're committing to becoming familiar with of each of the Master Photographers listed.
Each Study Group session will begin with a half-hour, free-flowing discussion of the artists/genre. Be prepared to share with the group (1) what inspires you about the artists’ techniques/philosophies, and (2) how you intend to integrate this new knowledge into the day’s shoot. During the remainder of the session, we will experiment with (not imitate) the Masters’ styles and techniques.
Study Groups are limited to eight people. Please, since group size is limited, DO NOT RSVP “YES” UNLESS YOU WILL DEFINITELY ATTEND. If you RSVP “Yes” and then have an unavoidable change of plans, PLEASE let us know ASAP so we can give waiting-list members your spot.
WHAT: For this session, we’ll draw inspiration from two Masters who are famous for abstract expression: Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan.
WHEN: Meetup is at 4:00p, Saturday, May 15. (Your study materials will arrive by May 13.)
WHERE: Nelson’s Landing. Directions: From US 93/95, between Henderson and Boulder City, turn right (south) on US 95 (toward Searchlight/Laughlin/Needles; Veterans Memorial Hwy.). At 10.3 miles, turn left (east) on NV-165, which follows Eldorado Canyon through Eldorado Mountains; past the town of Nelson (at 11.3mi) and the Techatticup Mine to the “spectacular overlook” of Lake Mojave/Colorado River (about 18 mi total). NOTE: We may move from this initial meet-up location.
DETAILS: This will be a two-hour golden-hour shoot. Please bring: water, snacks, sun protection, and all your camera gear, including a tripod. You may be interested in signing up for the Star-Trails Shoot later that evening.
Hello there.. just need some clarification please.. we are meeting up at the end of the loop closest to the lake mojave... the map on the locations line shows another place... thank you again for your time... here is my number in case if there are any changes 702-683-6324
Yes, it's the loop at the end of the paved road for the initial meet. There's a chance that we could change locations once everybody gets together (I'm going early to scout things out). See everyone there.
I've loaded profiles of (1) Aaron Siskind and (2) Harry Callahan into FILES on this site. Study Group members: please review before tomorrow.
As well, I'm happy to take up to two riders, but I'll be on site from about 2:30 to ??? (the end of the Star Trails shoot).
