Street Photography--Chinese New Year - Afternoon of shooting the activity

Chinatown Plaza (map)

Selected By: A former member

WHAT: Street Photography—Chinese New Year Celebration. Shooting the afternoon activity.
WHEN: Sunday, February 21, 2010. The public Year of the Tiger Celebration ($3 admission) is slated for 10a-5p (with entertainment scheduled for 11a to 4p). Let’s shoot in the afternoon to catch the event as it happens. (1:30 - 3:00)

WHERE: Area of the Las Vegas Chinatown Plaza (4255 Spring Mountain Road #C201; one mile W. of Treasure Island). Specifically, meet on sidewalk directly in front of the left side of the arch.

QUESTION: Should we plan to meet for dinner afterward? Perhaps at Captial Seafood right there in Chinatown? They have an awesome menu and we could get one or two of their big tables that hold 15 or more people.

Cindy and I waited at the meetup point for 10 minutes and when nobody showed we started toward the entrance only to find a line that would have taken an hour to get in to the place. We went up on the balcony to see just what was going on inside and were very disappointed. This turned out to be nothing more than a parking lot swap meet being held by the various businesses located in the chinatown center. Bill did call as we were leaving and he seemed as diappointed as we were with the event.

Hi all! I got there at about noon or so - later than we expected, so we just waited in line and went in. Lots of photographers everywhere! I couldn't imagine who was with the group and who wasn't! I got a couple of decent shots - I'll post them to the Flickr group.

    Hi Mark
I was there as I like to shoot the entire festival but forgot where we were supposed to meet at 1:30. It was a good show but it would be nice if they expanded the area that the audience has to watch the entertainment as it is a tight fit.

I showed up later than planned and bs'd with Marshal for a short time. Then I took numerous photos of the mock stage battles. Man, can some of those guys catch some air. Then I had a sign made with hopefully, my name color painted and framed in Chinese. Afterwards, I ate some Korean food inside one of the restaurants--I wanted to eat more formal than trying to eat on the move with both a sign and camera in hand.

I was a bit disappointed, I didn't think that the photographic opportunities were anything great. To many people jammed into to little of space. I just saw Mark's comment and agree. It was like a swap meet, I was expecting to see a little more cultural activity worth photography.
