Street photography is a type of documentary photography that captures “human drama” within public places. In street photographer Ken Lamug’s view, “One of the beautiful elements of street photography is that it is spontaneous, unplanned and unpredictable... anything can happen.” Ken, a member of our SNP Meetup Group, says that street shoots require great patience and anticipation. “A photographer must always be looking for subjects to fall into the right place at a cohesive and interesting moment.”

At this meetup on Saturday (Dec. 5 @ 1:30p) we’ll begin at Beyond the Neon, a street-photography exhibit by Ken Lamug and Tom Jones. Ken and Tom will be with us for that hour to talk about street photography and their exhibit, as well as answer our questions about the challenges of this photography genre.

At 2:30p we’ll start making our way downtown to the Freemont Street Experience for a hands-on street-photography shoot with Ken and Tom. We will meet in front of (i.e., outside) Starbucks at The Golden Nugget (129 E. Fremont St.).

Given that Las Vegas’ 23rd Annual Downtown Hoedown and its Tree Lighting Ceremony are both taking place that day, there should be no shortage of “interesting moments.”

Here's a link for everyone to checkout. It will greatly improve your street shooting: http://2point8.whileseated.org/wow-footer/

Whenever I'm out in an event. Always observe the crowd and not what's happening on the stage, learn to anticipate moments and things right before it happens. My goal for this shoot was to photograph a huge puff of smoke coming out of someones mouth but I didn't get to do it. So I had to wait for someone to take a puff and release it then I would take the shot :)

Just posted my first & only attempt at this genre. I call it "Religious Dogma." It wasn't until I loaded the image onto the computer that I noticed the "One Way" sign. Aint that the truth with street preachers?

    •  I appreciate everybody coming out on such a cold day. Ken & Tom: thank you so much for mentoring us and sharing your work, ideas, and suggestions. Your memorable images are truly thought provoking. With the exhibit and street shoot, I feel baptized in street photograph. The afternoon left me overflowing with creative ideas. Again, thank you.

It was a great introduction into street photography. I really appreciated having Tom and Ken to talk to at their exhibition. Thanks Jan!
    •  It was a great experience just wish I was better photographer. There were alot I missed as I was not fast enough to capture them. I would do it again.
